April is recognized nationally as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM).  This is an excellent opportunity for your rape crisis center (RCC) to have events that raise awareness of the issues concerning sexual violence, spotlight your agency and collaborative partnerships and the great work that you are doing in the community, and emphasize what invaluable services are available for survivors of sexual assault and their families.

Below is a short list of activities that some rape crisis centers have used in their communities with varying success to engage the community for  SAAM events:

  • Community march – ‘Walk a mile in her shoes”
  • Take back the night rally
  • Clothesline project
  • Public Service Announcement (PSA)
  • Vagina Monologues
  • Poetry Slam
  • Community pledge signing of violence free living
  • Pair of shoes displayed to represent the number of reported rapes in your community

CALCASA has a SAAM events document that gives a brief example of a few community events that RCC’s have used before.

If your agency is holding SAAM events  please click here to include them on the events calendar.
