Earlier this week, Assemblyman Anthony Portantino reintroduced a bill that “would require police to document their progress in testing evidence from rapes, after Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed similar legislation earlier this month.”

The bill “would require law enforcement agencies, starting in 2010, to report to the state Department of Justice the number of rape kits they received and tested.” CALCASA supported similar legislation earlier this year.

Portantino said “requiring police to accurately track their records on testing rape kits would provide more accountability to the public.”  The Assemblyman plans to present the bill to lawmakers when the regular legislative session begins in January.
