Growing Boys Into Men: Countering Traditional Masculinity Through Norms Change

Countering norms that reinforce traditional masculinity is an opportunity to prevent violence in a lasting, comprehensive way. This web conference will highlight specific strategies and efforts that seeks to change norms related to gendered violence. Different norms will be examined with regard to their historical context, distinct challenges, and opportunities for collaborative work.

Our web conferences feature an opportunity to participate in online question & answer sessions and live text chat between participants. Last week over 50 people attended CALCASA’s web conference for California Rape Prevention & Education grantees on Measuring Prevention: Examining Strategies to Measure Effectiveness of Sexual Violence Prevention Program. Paul Schewe presented on approaches to evaluating prevention programs.

Evaluating the outcomes of prevention efforts is complicated because there are so many social forces that contribute to sexual violence.  Participants in the web conference brainstormed many potential risk and protective factors, as seen in the world cloud below:

When it is not possible to measure a shift on the actual incidence of sexual violence , Paul Schewe suggests looking at proxy measures that may include

• healthier relationships
• improved grades
• decreases in bullying
• increased school attendance
• reduced school behavior problems
• increased use of condoms
• increased activism
• increased number of students willing to volunteer their time to prevention efforts

Recipients of Rape Prevention Education funds administered by the California Department of Public Health are required to develop an Action Plan or Logic Model as part of each grantee’s planning process for primary prevention programs.  On January 28, 2009, CALCASA provided a web conference on using logic models as a tool for program planning in order to provide support for this requirement.

This forum will present a discussion of the resources and tools needed to support and sustain a violence against women primary prevention movement (e.g., proper framing of issues, research and evaluation, tool development, training and technical assistance, resource development, etc.), and a discussion of strategies to create and/or obtain these resources (e.g., broad-based partnerships, legislation and advocacy, etc.).

The session will be co-presented by Rachel Davis and Annie Lyles of the Prevention Institute, and guests include Tonya Lovelace of the Women of Color Network and Patty Wetterling, Sexual Violence Prevention Program Director of the Minnesota Department of Health.

A Web Conference Examining Strategies to Measure Effectiveness of Sexual Violence Prevention Program

In this web conference for California’s Rape Prevention and Education grantees, Paul Schewe will review strategies to measure primary prevention programs.  Strategies will include post-only methods, pre-post methods, and the use of control groups. Techniques explored will include use of satisfaction surveys, student self-reports, teacher ratings of student behavior, and archival data.

Objectives:

By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to

• Identify how to use logic models to develop measurable objectives for prevention programs
• Describe three strategies to evaluate sexual violence prevention programs
• Describe three sources of data that can be used to evaluate prevention programs
